The Department of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering was founded in 1952, formerly known as the Department of Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering. It is one of the first authorized units of MSc and PhD degree in China, as well as a post-doctoral research station. It is currently one of the National Defense key disciplines of Aeronautics & Astronautics Manufacturing Engineering.
The department currently has more than 60 teachers, including 20 professors, 20 doctoral supervisors and 33 associate professors. The undergraduate direction of the department was the aircraft manufacturing engineering, which was nominated as the National Featured Specialty, Key Specialty of Defense and Prestigious Specialty of Shaanxi Province. It is also one of the first pilot specialties for outstanding professional engineers of Ministry of Education. The authorized unit of MSc and PhD degree is Aeronautics & Astronautics Manufacturing Engineering. The post-doctoral research station is built within the discipline of the Aeronautics & Astronautics Science & Technology. The first PhD student of this discipline in China was also graduated in our department.
The department has two laboratories, i.e. the Laboratory of Aircraft Manufacturing Process and Equipment, and the Key Laboratory of Contemporary Design & Integrated Manufacturing Technology of Ministry of Education. Supported by the Discipline construction projects of the National Featured Specialty, 211 Project, 985 Project etc., the techniques of the bending and shot-peening of large aircraft metal sheets, the digital collaborative manufacturing system, manufacturing processes and equipment for turbine engine, etc. hold the domestic leading position. More than 400 important research programs like the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 973, 863, National Key Technology R&D Program, Key Defense Advanced Research Projects etc. have been undertaken by our department. Many research achievements have been made.
Currently, the department has become a professional teaching, researching and experimental base for advanced aircraft manufacturing. Unique technical advantages and distinctive features of national defense with strong research and development capabilities of social services are formed. We have gained large numbers of research achievements of international advanced/leading level, which have won two of the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, more than 20 of the provincial science and technology awards, one of the Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.
